Hilma’s Ghost is a feminist artist collective founded by artists and educators Dannielle Tegeder and Sharmistha Ray. Inspired by the legacy of Hilma af Klint, the collective merges contemporary art with spirituality, divination, and ritual to challenge gendered power structures while recovering feminist histories. Their collaborative practice encompasses painting, drawing, tarot, installations, artist books, workshops, exhibitions, and community-based projects.
Founded in 2020, Hilma’s Ghost has completed more than 30 collaborative projects, participated in nearly 100 public programs worldwide, and, since 2022, has led an itinerant art school that has reached more than 20,000 participants. Their Abstract Futures Tarot has become widely recognized among artists and occult practitioners and is currently in its third edition.
The collective has exhibited internationally at institutions including The Guggenheim, Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP), The Morgan Library & Museum, Palm Springs Art Museum, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, and Galería RGR, among others. Their work has been featured in The New York Times, The Brooklyn Rail, Artnet, and Hyperallergic. In 2025, they unveiled Abstract Futures, a permanent 600-square-foot glass mosaic commissioned by MTA Arts & Design for Grand Central Station in New York City.
Sharmistha Ray is a Professor at Carnegie Mellon University, and Dannielle Tegeder is a Professor at Lehman College, City University of New York.
