COSMIC RATIONAL

cosmic rational emerges to reflect upon the complexity of finding one's place in our rapidly accelerating, refracting present, creating a constellation of ideas in which everything is consciousness. Nothing is static here; every corner of the cosmos is disrupted. As in consciousness, for Bitzer, everything that happens is spontaneous, organic, multiple, simultaneous, moldable, infinite, and constantly expanding.

The main protagonist of the exhibition is "happy Eddie," a shape-shifting eel-like figure who, in Bitzer's world, has the capacity to reconfigure, reconstruct, and camouflage himself perpetually: he expands accordion-like in the exhibition's title work, compactly coils himself into a luminous bull's eye in the humorously titled painting Eddie Spaghetti. Eddie is ravenous, a cosmic devourer. In Bitzer's artistic lexicon, the happy Eddie is a vessel for the soul—it traces the contours of outside influences and stimuli according to its inner logic, absorbing, consuming, or digesting them.

cosmic rational, the exhibition's title work, encompasses a conglomeration of painted and sculptural surfaces. Stripes, triangles, and hard angles come together to form an outsized happy Eddie comprised of materials like wood, glass, and painting on canvas. Teeming with optical illusions, the painting extends into three-dimensional space; vertical lines jut outwards from the wall, painted dots give way to ping pong balls, and a textual clue to one of life's greatest mysteries is embedded in the work's undulating surfaces.

Soliloqui depicts Bitzer's reflections on the nature of self-perception. It represents a monologue in introspection, where one's inner voice constructs reality. The spliced silhouettes deftly capture the interconnection between the self and the outside world. For Bitzer, it is a reminder that no matter how much we dialogue internally, "otherness" will always constitute a key element in our identity, emphasizing the notion that our self is situated between our inner thoughts and the influence of others.

Matthias Bitzer's portrait mirrors are a symbolic gateway to our past, present, and future. Standing in front of it implies seeing our current reflection and the nature of time through our image. Bitzer's mysterious faces stand in the gap between the historical and the contemporary. Contemplating their reflective surface implicates embarking on a contemplative journey that reveals the different faces of our experiences and the cultural references that give us identity.

Bitzer's interest in capturing experiences, memories, and sensations has led him to develop, during the last 15 years, 48 pieces that make up the collage Phosohor Notes, artwork from which Jesi Khavidi says:

“Unlike the imagery in his more figurative works, which have a cryptic yet timeless quality, the phosphor notes possess a different kind of temporality: quick, rapid-fire snapshots of our time, which the artist further grapples with on a more abstract, embedded level in larger-scale works. Like “writing between the lines in invisible ink,” the notes are a contemporary form of the ancient literary genre hypómnema, notebooks that formed a material memory of things read, heard, and thought, offering them to the user as an accumulated treasure for rereading and later meditation”.

His creations are not set in stone; they acquire and construct meaning in every observer's mind; representing the perpetuity of the "constant" in the changing; they adapt to any experiment, day, and space; it is not limited to a painting, a piece, a discourse, an exhibition, or an era. His highly personal work unveils the fragility of what we take for "truth”.
